Earn Income While You Study with VA Work-Study
The VA Work-Study Program is a federal benefit that allows veterans using education benefits (Chapter 33 Post-9/11 GI Bill, Chapter 30, Chapter 35, or Chapter 1606) to earn tax-free income by performing VA-approved work activities while enrolled in school at least three-quarter time.
What Work Activities Are Covered?
- Assisting with VA outreach programs
- Providing administrative or clerical support to VA offices
- Supporting veteran service organizations approved by VA
- Working at your school’s veterans certifying official office
- Performing veterans benefits outreach on campus

What is a VA Work Study?
How do I apply?
The VA Work Study Program for veterans provides a flexible, paid opportunity for eligible service members, veterans, and dependents using GI Bill education benefits. Participants earn tax-free income while gaining hands-on experience in a VA-approved position.
This program is ideal for students attending college, technical school, or certification programs who want to reduce debt and build their resume at the same time.
You may qualify if you are:
- A veteran, service member, reservist, or eligible dependent
- Using VA education benefits
- Enrolled at least ¾ time in an approved education or training program

How Much Can You Earn?
Work-study participants are paid at the federal or state minimum wage rate, whichever is higher. Students can work up to 25 hours per week and receive an advance payment at the start of the work-study period.
